The Singers' Society

Details

No Auditions, Three Choirs, One Great Society!!

The Singers' Society exists to give students and local professionals the chance to sing with a large group of like-minded individuals in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We perform a wide variety of choral music to a high standard and enjoy doing so! We put on four concerts of our own a year, as well as taking part in many smaller Union, University and community events.

The society runs a large Main Chorus, with over 80 members, which is open to all whatever their experience. We also run two smaller choirs; our chamber choir 'Socii Cantorum' and our 'Ladies' Choir'. These choirs give more experienced singers with good sight-reading skills the opportunity to sing in a more intimate group atmosphere.

Our repertoire for the 2012/13 is as ever hugely varied and is going to be a lot of fun. In November all three choirs will be putting on a concert based around Musical Theatre performing songs from both the West End and Broadway. In December all three choirs will be involved in our traditional Christmas concert featuring all the classic carols and some Christmas coral music including 'Ceremony of Carols'. In May we will be putting on a spectacular Fifteenth Anniversary concert with music including Carmina Burana and Misa Kenya, and a piece commissioned for the occasion!

In addition to all this, we will also be singing at various community events including lots of lovely carolling around Christmas. Last year we were involved in events fundraising for major charities such as the Classic FM Foundation, Heart Research UK and the Lost Chord (recently featured on channel 4's 'Secret Millionaire'). We also have lots of volunteering opportunities for our members, from getting involved in a singing club at Sheffield Children's Hospital to hosting an opera day for some primary school children to performing at a local residential home.

We also have a very active social life. In addition to our trips to the pub after every rehearsal we also have a varied programme of social events planned for the coming year. This includes our traditional pub carolling trips in December and the end of year formal; as well as meals out, nights out and trips to see local performances.
