Sign Language Society offers students the opportunity to learn British sign language in a relaxed environment with the help of an experienced teacher as well as support from the society members themselves. You can take part in Give It A Go sessions or just come along to our socials for a drink and learn the basics! There is also the chance to gain Level 1 and Level 2 BSL qualifications. The Sheffield University Sign Language Society (SLS) is a society with the objective of teaching British sign language (BSL) and providing a forum where students can use BSL in an informal setting. The society also allows students to undertake exams with the BSL qualification awarding body Signature. The society provides teaching sessions where the material required to pass the exams is presented, however attendance of the teaching sessions is not necessarily enough, on its own, to ensure success in the exams. The society suggests that anyone wanting to undertake the exams regularly attends the teaching sessions and society socials in order to learn and practice the BSL material. SLS also suggests that, where possible, candidates practice on their own or in groups outside designated SLS sessions. While SLS will endeavour to prepare candidates for the exams as fully as possible it does not guarantee success in the exams.
