The Sheffield University Samba Bateria is a drumming group, playing traditional Latin American percussion and drum kit. We play a variety of rhythms similar to the Rio de Janeiro Carnival style batucada, Afoxe and Samba-Reggae, with an added African influence.
The band was was formed in 2006, and has been involved in Notting Hill Carnival, International Cultural Evening, World Scout Jamboree, Peace in the Park, World AIDS Day and charity fundraisers, as well as collaborating with societies such as Capoeira, the Latin American and Mexico society, and the African Affairs Network.
Samba Society is open to students and non-students. Everybody is welcome, no musical or drumming experience necessary, and all music is taught in the informal practices held on a Monday night. We're looking to recruit new members, and make the society bigger and better than ever.
If you'd like to be a part of Samba, the best way is to come to a Give it a Go Session! Details for beginners sessions will be available at the beginning of the university semester - look out for it in the Give it a Go booklets and website.
Or alternatively: email Alice at nu4samba@shef.ac.uk and she'll give you all the information you need to get involved.
