Whether you are a Politics student or not, the Politics Society (PolSoc) provides a variety of activities to suit you; socials, sports, volunteering and much more! We aim to provide a support base for all students whether you are first year, postgraduate or international. All our committee are here for YOU so don't hesitate to contact us (using the email below or a cheeky Facebook message) if you want to learn more or just need a little help!
Here is a little taster of the amazing opportunities that PolSoc can offer you!
- Socials - Whether you drink or not, the PolSoc socials are some of the best events at the University of Sheffield! PolSoc holds regular alcoholic drinks socials throughout Sheffield with amazing drinks offers, a variety of fancy dress themes and fabulous locations. We also hold a number of joint socials with other societies such as the Big Fat Social - a social which boasts 6 of the union's biggest societies. Regular non-alcoholic socials are also a key part of PolSoc.
- Events - PolSoc runs two major annual events - the trip abroad and the ball. The trip abroad is a fantastic weekend away in one of Europe's most important cities. It is a brilliant way to have fun with your coursemates and aims to be as cheap as possible! Previous locations have included Paris, Dublin and Amsterdam. The ball is the hottest event in the PolSoc calender. The venue varies but it is guaranteed to be an amazing night and an opportunity to get glammed-up with your mates!
- Political Events - With a high demand for more political events, PolSoc has created two brand new committee positions to cater to this demand. With new events such as the University Question Time and the 'Film For Thought' series, PolSoc is getting more political than ever!
- Sports - The PolSoc football squad boasts five 6-side teams and one 11s team, and the PolSoc netball squad has two teams. Both squads have players of all abilities, their own personalised PolSoc kit and regular socials. They both compete within the University intramural leagues.
- Graduate and Careers Service - PolSoc aims to provide you with the ability to have an edge in the job market after University. With strong ties with the University Careers Service, PolSoc arranges a number of events throughout the year to do just that.
- Charity and Volunteering - PolSoc aims to give back as much as possible to the wider community. Whether they are sleeping outside the union for Rough It or walking throughout the night for RAG Spiderwalk, PolSoccers are getting constantly more and more involved in the charity opportunities PolSoc has to offer. Regular charity events, like pub quizzes, are run throughout the year in conjunction with other societies. Volunteering has quickly become a key aspect of PolSoc and we provide a variety of opportunities to volunteer, including bucket collections for Marie Curie Cancer Care and local school sports days.
- Inclusion - Our International and Postgraduate Secretaries aim to ensure that PolSoc offers something for everyone. Regular events for postgraduate and international students are organised by the society to ensure that you are settling in okay to Sheffield and student life in general.
Sounds pretty awesome? If you don't believe us, check out the awards that PolSoc won at the Society Awards 2011/2012:
