MEETINGS 6:30PM WEDNESDAYS IN THE ACTIVITIES AND SPORTS ZONE. ALL STUDENTS WELCOME!
People & Planet is the largest student network in Britain campaigning for action on world poverty, human rights & the environment. People & Planet Sheffield is Sheffield's branch of the national network.
We do lots of stuff, big and small, from cake sales and film showings to awareness raising stalls, petitioning and running campaigns, to getting involved in national demos and mass actions.
A few of the things we did last year include:
• Campaigning for the Union to Bottle Out! All students voted on the proposal to stop selling bottled water in the Union and instead sell re-usable bottles and provide more free water fountains and the vote passed by a majority of over 1000!
• Campaigning for the University and Union to sign up to the Worker Rights Consortium (WRC). This year Sheffield became the first University in the UK to sign up to the WRC, alongside its Union, which means that all the factories where Uni/Union clothes are made will be checked to make sure that there are good working conditions for the workers!
• Running a 'Swap-Shop', where students can swap unwanted items of clothes for other students' unwanted gems!
• Protesting against RBS (the Oil Bank of Scotland) and campaigning against a biofuel power plant being built in Sheffield.
This year we're hoping to do even more, including running a campaign against tar sand extraction in Canada, and encouraging students to save energy in the Big Green Makeover, plus much much more! We have a group vote on which campaigns we want to run each year so what campaigns we run depends on you!
It's really easy to get involved, whether you're an experienced campaigner or never done any campaigning in your life, and there's something for everyone!
Come down to a meeting, 6:30pm on Wednesdays in the Activities and Sports Zone to find out more and see if you want to get involved. We're very friendly and all students are welcome!
