Jewish Society

Details

The Jewish Society is open to all students to meet up with other Jewish students or just to experience what Judaism has to offer.

We arrange for (kosher) Friday Night dinners to be available to students every week, with the society hosting our own meal every three weeks. We also arrange social and educational events at various times throughout the year.  There is usually one event per week!

As well as a social group, we also exist to help you in any way possible to be as Jewish as you want to be in Sheffield and aim to represent you at the University and Union when you feel your voice is not heard.

We are pluralist and non-denominational.

The best way to stay in contact with us is via our Facebook Group which can be found on the link below.

How to join: Come see us at the Activities Fair during Inro Week or email us at jewish.society@sheffield.ac.uk

High Holy Days 2012:

This year Rosh Hashanah falls from sunset on the Sunday of Intro Week (16/05/12) until nightfall on the Tuesday of Intro Week (18/05/12).  If you are a new student at Sheffield you may be asked to move into your accommodation on the Sunday as well as attend several introduction and registration events over this time period however you can make other arrangements due to religious observance and there is no need to feel pressured into changing the way you choose to practise your faith.  The Jewish Society has worked together with the University Chaplaincy Service to inform both Accommodation Services and individual academic departments of Rosh Hashanah.  If you need to move into your accommodation at a later date, please contact Accommodation Services to arrange this.  If you are unable to attend Intro Week events held by your department or your registration event, please contact your department to seek advice on what you should do.

Yom Kippur will take place from sunset Tuesday 25th September until nightfall Wednesday 26th, this is during the first week of lectures and therefore it is likely that if you wish to observe the Yom Tov that you will miss lectures, labs, tutorials or seminars.  Once again, departments will be aware of this and it is ok to miss these but please contact your department and relevant tutors to let them know.  The Jewish Society will be able to arrange for places to eat both before and after the fast.

There is both an Orthodox and a Reform Synagogue in Sheffield so that you can observe the High Holy Days in Sheffield.
