Japan Society

Details

Sheffield Japan Society was set up in 2002 for the benefit of Japanese students at Sheffield University, and any other students with an interest in Japan. This means that unlike many international societies, our members come from many different countries, rather than being dominated by any one nationality

In our first year, the Society won the Best New Society Award, and in 2004 we won the title of Best National Society of the Year. Being such a young society we were very honoured to have achieved this status, and are delighted that 2005/06 has seen our success continue with a record membership of over 200, and a fantastically successful program of events.

Over the past few years we have held many events, such as karaoke nights, tandem learning, club nights, Japanese film showings, ice skating trips, summer BBQs, bowling trips, an Asian ball, and some legendary Christmas Parties! We have also contributed to the International food evening (which saw our sushi flying off the table!) and the International Cultural Evening, for which in 2005 we performed a samurai version of Romeo and Juliet. One of our most successful events was Japan Day, a huge celebration of Japanese a culture attended by over 900 people who came from as far away as Australia just for the day!
