Book Soc

Details

What is BookSoc?

The University of Sheffield Book Society's members read a book once every three weeks, then meet up to discuss, spew vitriol, or sing the praises of the book we just read. At the start of each meetup you'll be given a shortlist of books for the next discussion, which you'll get to vote on.

We think we know some great books that you'd like to read, but if there's any books you think would make for a great discussion, just let us know and we'll add it to the next shortlist! We're open to anything – novels, short story collections, poetry collections, plays, works in translation – just so long as it's not overly lengthy. (So don't worry – we're not gonna drop Infinite Jest in your lap when you've got an assignment due !)

In discussions, all kinds of contribution are valued – you're welcome to give us your hardcore deconstructive psychoanalytic neo-Marxist reading of the book, or just tell us which bits you liked! And don't worry if you didn't manage to finish the book either – we'd love you to come along and discuss the beginning.

After each meeting we usually hang out in Interval, the Student Union's pub. So BookSoc's not a bad way to meet cool new people.

The Committee

We're the ones to get in touch with if you have any suggestions for the society, like a book you'd like to read or an idea for a social. Just look for these guys in their pink hoodies, or search for « University of Sheffield Book Soc » on Facebook !
