Black Students' Committee

Details

The Black Student Commitee (BSC) addresses issues specific to Black students (incorporating those of African, Caribbean, Arab, Asian, and Latin American origin). We work with other committees and student societies, in particular the NUS Black Student Campaign to improve Black student representation and at all levels within the university and nationally.

Our activities include holding talks and discussion groups on related issues, and providing a voice for Black students. In addition we celebrate diversity and black history during Black History Week and International Women's Day.

JOIN BLACK STUDENTS' COMMITTEE! MAKE YOUR VOICES HEARD!

Did you know that one in five university students in the UK are from an ethnic minority?

Are you one of them? Regardless of whether you are a British or international student, coming from an Arab, Asian African or Caribbean background means that you can now join the Black Students campaign and work towards fair opportunities for students from ethnic minorities to succeed, regardless or race, religion, nationality or cultural heritage.

The University of Sheffield is proud with its multicultural student population, so why not join the Black Students Committee and help celebrate what we have on our campus?

Come to the Black Students Committee’s Annual General Meeting THIS WEDNESDAY 16th, 17.30, in Hicks Lecture Theatre 6 if you want to:

· Learn more about the campaign and why it is important. You don’t need to join anything!

· Sign up to the Committee’s mailing list. If you are interested in what you hear you can sign up for updates on the Committee’s work.

· JOIN THE COMMITTEE (AGM - ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING) - RUN FOR A POSITION ON THE COMMITTEE - If you want to lead the campaign in Sheffield you can nominate yourself for one of the Committee positions. These positions include: Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, 2 Event Coordinators, Publicity Rep, Charity and Volunteering Rep and Social and Inclusion Rep.

This looks great on the CV, develops your skills and allows you to be a student representative and meet lots of great people! These positions will be elected at the meeting, so you can either email your nomination to blackstudentscouncillor@shef.ac.uk or just run at the meeting.

Don’t worry about prior experience because if you get elected you will receive training and support from the student officers. From tackling discrimination and prejudice, to celebrating the history of the civil rights movement and improving employability prospects, this is your chance to learn about and lead the Black Students campaign in your University.

To learn more about the Committee and to remind yourself of the meeting join the “University of Sheffield Students’ Union Black Students Committee AGM” event on Facebook.

Best wishes, Barbara Omondi, Black Students Councillor

Rachel Colley, Activities Officer

Mina Kasherova, International Students’ Officer
