Sheffield Azerbaijan Society (SAS) is a union of, but not limited to, individuals with Azerbaijani origin studying and/or working in Sheffield. The society is also open to everybody who is interested in engaging with and learning more about Azerbaijan.
SAS devotes enormous effort to promotion of Azerbaijani culture prominent for its exceptional traditions, cuisine, music and the like. Particular attention is given to organization of different events in a form of festivals and celebrations every academic year. The key aim here is not only to advance awareness about the country and its cultural distinctiveness among the University students. In addition, the society intends to facilitate inter-cultural engagement of its members with various national societies and students with different backgrounds.
SAS attempts to benefit from all the opportunities presented by the Student Union. This year members of the society participated in the Language Festival and taught Azerbaijani language to students of other nationalities. Novruz Festival, celebration of the most significant holiday for Azerbaijani people, was organized in March, attracted a very large number of students and facilitated their conversance with the Caucasian country's customs and traditions. Moreover, the society members are united in a football team and hold weekly matches among themselves or with those who dare to challenge the SAS team.
