RAG & Bummit

RAG

'RAG stands for Raising and Giving' - and that's exactly what we do!

Across the year we give students the opportunity to take part in everything from nocturnal star-lit ramblings in the Peak District, legendary hitch-hikes across Europe, memorable sleep-outs on the concourse to bundles of events organised by clubs, societies and individuals right here in the Students' Union. And all this to raise as much money for charity as possible!

We ♥ the community that we become a part of as students, so we aim to donate 85% of our annual total to local charities in South Yorkshire and the North Derbyshire area. We like to make a difference to smaller charities who cannot afford to have large-scale fundraising programmes, and hope that the amounts we donate can make an even bigger difference to our local community.

Last year we raised £187,110, worked with over 110 clubs and societies and supported over 110 different charities.

There are three main ways to get involved with RAG

  1. Take part in our events! Look out for opportunities across the year to raise money for numerous different charities! We strive to give you the chance to take part in a varied and exciting year of memorable events which will make a very real difference to some amazing causes.
  2. Clubs and societies, why not Adopt a Charity! The Adopt a Charity scheme works with clubs, societies, individuals and the student residences to help them fundraise for charities of their choice. There's also an opportunity to claim back up to 50% for your club or society too! Last year we worked with over 110 student groups raising money for over 100 different charities.
  3. Individuals! You can adopt a charity too and benefit from all the support of the Adopt a Charity team on the RAG Committee and x2 full-time staff members. Alternatively, you can become a RAG Rep, learn C.V enhancing events-planning and fundraising skills from our workshops, gain HEAR recognition, make new friends and put on your own fundraising events with groups of like-minded individuals.

See our website www.sheffieldrag.com for more information on all of the above or email rag@sheffield.ac.uk.

Bummit

Bummit is a committee in its own right, linked to RAG through their commitment to fundraising, and hitching! Last year Bummit Committee raised £75,623.40 for charity in its most successful year yet.

Bummit organise landmark charity hitch-hikes: Baby Bummit, the epic-UK hitch hike and Big Bummit, the legendary European hitch-hike which takes place in Easter vacation. People taking part in the events are not restricted to hitchhiking for the entire distance; the use of public transport is permitted. The fee of using public transport can often be waived by showing, for example, a train conductor or bus driver official letters printed in the Bummit Bible. The Bummit Bible is a booklet given to each participant. It contains safety information, locations and contact details of the British embassies in different European countries, travel advice, and a letter from the Students' Union. This is hitching done smoothly!
