I've been at the Students' Union since 1997, first as a Shop Supervisor, then as Manager for the last few years. Before I came here I was a Body Shop manager for a number of years.
When the job at the Students' Union came up I jumped at it because I loved the idea of serving such a special group of people. I had grown disillusioned with high street retail and wondered what it would be like to work in such a unique environment. I have never looked back! I love the fact that every day is different with new challenges. The people I work with are dedicated, professional and friendly. We employ a high number of students in our shop and this itself was a very new concept to me - but one I enjoy immensely!
The Students' Union's democratic processes are very important to me and I enjoy implementing the decisions of our members, but at the same time I feel trusted and able to make decisions with the rest of the shop team.
I think the Students' Union is an open and honest place to work, and that the senior managers are very accessible which is very important. I have a great relationship with my line manager which means a lot to me. There are some great training opportunities and I love the fact that I come into regular contact with staff from other departments. It's also great that I have access to some fantastic facilities such as bars, club nights and places to eat and drink.
Sheffield students are very special people and I enjoy serving and working with them. I can't imagine working anywhere else and I would tell anyone to come and join us if the opportunity arose!
