Information Commons

Can't sleep? Grab a coffee and head over to the IC. The IC combines library facilities with study spaces and IT resources. It's open 24 hours a day, has full wireless access, over 500 PCs and a 70-seat cafe. And with over 100,000 of the most in-demand books, you won't be short of inspiration.

The best library in the UK

As well as the 24-hour IC, we have three other library sites on campus: Western Bank Library, St Georges Library and the Health Sciences Library. They all offer something different. Together, it means access to 1.4 million books and journals and over 2,200 study spaces. And with your own online account, you can explore our online resources from wherever you are. To make life that bit easier, our four library sites extend their opening hours when you need them most.

It's a winning combination – we came joint first in the 2011 Times Higher Student Experience survey.

A growing community

We're investing in the buildings on our campus to make sure you'll have access to the best facilities.

Our award-winning Students' Union recently had a £5 million renovation and we're now refurbishing the neighbouring building to create a combined space with top–class services and facilities for staff, students and visitors.

We have two major new engineering buildings in pipeline and our Management School is moving into a redesigned and refurbished 21st-century research and learning environment

We'll give you an email account, secure file storage and free access to the internet and software applications across the campus. Take your pick from over 34 computer rooms and 1,300 PCs. Or tap into our extensive wireless network with your own laptop, netbook or smartphone.

Research. Academic writing. Presenting. Time management. There's no need to feel daunted by all the skills you'll be using for your degree. Our online skills hubs, TASH and MASH, will ensure you get to grips with all the techniques you need to impress your tutor.

Learn a new language

If you have a free module choice, you can take a course in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish or another language.. The courses are at different levels and open to all students. Our Self-Access Centre has a range of resources, including satellite channels and PCs, so you can also learn a language independently or just do a bit more in your own time.

Need to improve your English?

Our English Language Teaching Centre, accredited by the British Council, runs a wide range of courses to support both UK and international students, including a free writing advisory service to help with written work.

Courses for international students include an International Summer School and an intensive course to prepare students for studying a degree in the UK.
