Government loans and grants

The government offers student loans and grants to help with living costs and fees. Both are assessed by Student Finance England and provided by the Student Loans Company (SLC).

Student grant and loan for maintenance

These are non-repayable grants and repayable loans to help cover the cost of everyday living expenses like accommodation, food and books. The rates are based on:

  • Your household (family) income
  • Whether or not you are living at home
  • The duration of your course

Student loan for fees

Eligible full-time undergraduate students will not have to pay fees before they start university or while they are studying.

Instead eligible students will be able to apply for a Student loan for fees to cover these costs. This means they won't have to find the money before they start their course or while they are studying, and the fees will be paid direct to the university or college on their behalf.
