The 12 month MA in International Development and Planning is directed at those wishing to acquire the skills and knowledge to pursue careers in planning and development in the global South. Whether you are already a professional planner or wishing to acquire a professional qualification to start you on a career in international development, postgraduate study here in Sheffield offers you the opportunity to explore the relevance of cutting-edge theoretical debates for international development and planning practice, and develop skills in policy analysis, research and design.
We are looking for students who will respond positively to the intellectual challenges this degree programme will present, and who will use the experience to inform their professional practice on graduation. With full accreditation from the UK´s Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), together with Sheffield's ranking as the top planning school in the UK, this postgraduate qualification also opens doors to employment in planning in the UK.
We welcome candidates from a wide range of subject and professional backgrounds onto this programme. Students from, or with work experience in, the Global South are particularly encouraged to apply.
The core staff who teach on this programme have active research links with countries in the global South, including India, South Africa and Egypt. They play an active role in the University's new inter-departmental Sheffield International Development Network (SIDNet). See the web pages for Glyn Williams, Paula Meth and Steve Connelly.
The accreditation by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) means that graduates can become chartered members of the Institute once necessary RTPI practice requirements have been met. See the RTPI's web pages for more details:
