MA in International Development and Planning

The 12 month MA in International Development and Planning is directed at those wishing to acquire the skills and knowledge to pursue careers in planning and development in the global South. This course is for you whether you are already a professional planner or wishing to acquire a professional qualification to start you on a career in international development.

Postgraduate study here in Sheffield offers you the opportunity to explore the relevance of cutting-edge theoretical debates and planning practice, whilst helping you to develop skills in policy analysis, research and design. We are looking for students who are repsonsive to the intellectual challenges this degree programme will present and who will use the experience to inform their professional practice on graduation. We welcome candidates from a wide range of subject and professional backgrounds onto this programme. Students from, or with work experience in, the Global South are particularly encouraged to apply.

With full accreditation from the UK´s Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), together with Sheffield's ranking as the top planning school in the UK, this postgraduate qualification will open numerous doors to employment in a varied range of sectors.

Field Trip to Cairo 

Our students will have the opportunity to develop their planning and design skills work during a field trip abroad. This year our students took part in an 8 day field trip to Cairo. Students met with professional planners, city officials and community members. Read more about the visit. 

Employability 

This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge which will allow you to follow a wide range of careers in planning and international development. Our graduates from have gone to work for a number of prestigious companies such as Oxfam, UK local authorities and the United Nations HABITAT organisation in Nairobi. The International Development and Planning course upholds the Department's established record and reputation for high-profile employment for graduates.

Admissions Criteria

All applications are treated individually and on their own merits. The normal entry requirement is a good honours degree, normally a First or Upper Second Class degree or its international equivalent. However, we recognise the value of experience and welcome applications from people who have been in practice of who bring other experience to their studies. We welcome applications from international students. However, if your education has not been in English you will be required to offer a suitable language qualification such as TOEFL.

Staff

The core staff who teach on this programme have active research links with countries in the global South, including India, South Africa and Egypt.
