Masters Level Study in Town and Regional Planning

The Department has a longstanding reputation in the delivery of high quality professional education at postgraduate level. Teaching on all programmes reflects the research and professional interests and experience of staff. If you study at Sheffield, you will be able to tap into a unique body of expertise in developing your own professional skills. Staff members have a wide-ranging involvement with professional practice, through consultancy, contact with local planning authorities and consultancies, and through the professional institutes. Practitioners and academics from outside Sheffield make regular contributions to the courses. This MA builds on one of the primary research areas of the department and prepares graduates for a career in planning.

MA in International Development and Planning

Focussing on the challenges facing the Global South, this programme prepares graduates for a careers in an international plannning context.

MA in Planning Research

This MA is for people wishing to specialise in research in planning or a related field, either as the first step towards studying for a PhD (see studying for a PhD) or to equip themselves for a professional career. It provides a solid grounding in the principles and practice of social science research, with a focus on how this is applied to planning. The programme is recognised by the UK Economic and Social Research Council as a 'research training' masters and can be taken as the first stage of a 1+3 PhD.

In addition to the programmes listed above, the Department is also partner with the School of Architecture in the dual Master of Architecture course that is accredited by both the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Royal Town Planning Institute. This new masters programme will develop your skills in urban design, planning and the development of urban areas. It is uniquely interdisciplinary in focus, opening up careers in managing, designing and planning urban spaces and places and draws on the internationally-recognised strengths of the University of Sheffield in planning, architecture, and real estate

This MA aims to prepare students both for further academic studies and to develop or continue their careers in development and environmental research and practice in the public and private sectors.
