Dr Matthew Gebhardt: General Information

Research

My research deals primarily with three broad themes: local decision-making and the influence of local, regional, national and global political-economic contexts; the structure and operation of planning institutions and processes; and the values and ethics of the planning profession. I am particularly interested in these themes as they relate to large-scale housing regeneration and redevelopment planning and to public participation strategies.

My doctoral research examined the complex interaction of policies, processes and people in planning for and implementing the redevelopment of public housing in Chicago, Illinois. Prior to and during this research, I worked as a planning consultant providing planning advice and services to a variety of different public, private and non-profit clients. Given my background and current placement I am keen to pursue international comparative research.

Teaching

I am currently the module coordinator for The Development Process (TRP 235) and Issues in Housing (TRP 4161) and co-coordinator of Local Action Planning Project (TRP 449). I supervise MA dissertations and I am a second supervisor for one Ph.D. student. In addition, I am the Level 4 Year Tutor.
