Fees and Funding
Fees
Fees for doctoral study for entry in academic year 2013-14 will be £3900 for UK/EU students and £12,760 for international (non-EU) students.
Funding
A range of funding for doctoral study is available on a competitive basis in each year. Brief details are provided below:
Each year the University offers a small number of prize scholarships to the very best PhD applicants. These scholarships pay full tuition fees, a maintenance stipend and a Research Training Support Grant. The University application deadline is normally at the beginning of February each year. We normally have an internal deadline at least 3 weeks in advance of the University deadline, i.e. early January, so that we can decide which applications to put forward to the University Panel for consideration.
A range of doctoral scholarships are offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences in each year. Awards can include tuition fees and a full maintenance stipend, tuition fees and a half maintenance stipend, tuition fees only, or a contribution to fees and/or living expenses. The application deadline is normally at the beginning of February in each year. Again, we normally have an internal deadline at least 3 weeks in advance of the Faculty deadline, in order to select nominations to put forward to the Faculty Panel.
ESRC White Rose Doctoral Training Centre Scholarships (UK/EU students only)
The University is part of the Economic and Social Research Council White Rose Doctoral Training Centre - a collaboration between the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York - and through this is able to offer a range of ESRC scholarships. Awards are available via the following schemes - DTC Discipline Scholarships, Network scholarships, Pathway Development scholarships and Collaborative studentships. For each of the schemes awards include UK/EU tuition fees and a maintenance stipend and can be for either a 3-year programme (known as '+3'), or 4 year programme (known as '1+3'). For most of the schemes the research projects will have been pre-defined and advertised. The deadline for applications is normally in February each year, although some may become available at other times. Please see Postgraduate Research Scholarships pages for up to date information.
Note: For all of the above schemes, as well as submitting an online application for admission as a postgraduate research student, you will also need to work with a prospective supervisor to develop a robust research proposal.
