The department's main aim is to maintain and enhance its standing in the research community and in particular to maintain its international reputation for undertaking leading edge research in planning.

The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) confirm the department's status as a world-class centre for the study of town and regional planning. The detailed assessment of the quality of published outputs and research environment ranked the department second amongst all town and country planning departments and top amongst accredited planning schools in the UK with 65% of research graded in the top 4* (world leading) and 3* (internationally excellent) categories.

35% of the work we submitted was judged to be at the top grade of 4*, representing quality that is world leading. This is the highest proportion in the UK, bettered by no other university.
