Working with Communities student

Abdi Ahmed – BA (Hons) Community Policy and Practice

"My initiation as a community worker started out as a volunteer and an interpreter and this led me to become involved in different organisations. It was through this experience that I observed community development at work and I developed an appreciation and interest in community development.

"I started studies in the programme, Working with Communities: Identity Regeneration and Change and then I continued with the BA Community Policy and Practice. These programmes have enabled me to develop various skills and techniques in my work with communities.

"The experiences that I have gained during the course of my studies have informed my practice and I have been able to use many of the strategies to address issues and problems affecting communities.

"As a community development worker, I am concerned about all the problematic issues and factors which can hinder the development of the community and therefore community education is an important aspect of my job.

"The flexibility of the programme schedules and the time of the classes make it convenient for working people to access training. Many of the programmes offered are part-time so that people can work and study at the same time. In addition to that some programmes are customised to suit the labour needs of various sectors of the society, so that with the variety of programmes, there is something for everyone.

"The key to the empowerment of people is through education and training and so my intended goal is to work along with the local education department to facilitate training at all levels."
