Where did you live? Would you recommend it?

I lived in Higgins, a suburb of Canberra. It was a 40 minute bus ride from the uni, but very quiet and safe. The rent wasn't cheap, but that's the same for most of Canberra. If you don't mind being a bit far from the city centre then I'd definitely recommend it.

Which department(s) did you study in?

Department of Botany and Zoology, School of Biology.

How does the workload/classes/teaching styles vary to Sheffield?

I found that assessment was far more spread out than at Sheffield - at ANU you can expect the final exam to be around 50 per cent of the module grade with the rest of the marks coming from assignments, field reports etc. In general the modules seem to have a larger practical component. Teaching styles are similar, but perhaps a little more interactive. Workload varies with the level of the module but usually about the same as Sheffield.

What did you do for fun at the weekends and during the holidays?

The coast is a three hour drive from Canberra so a day at the beach is always an option! Canberra has plenty of shops, cinemas etc, but it's pretty rural so there are lots of opportunities to go bush walking, rock climbing and mountain biking.

Did you join any societies or clubs?

I joined the university mountaineering club, which covers lots of different outdoor sports. I was also a member of the ANU Biology Society, which held lots of social events and free barbecues throughout the year.

Describe the University/City/things to do

Canberra is the capital of Australia, and houses all the government buildings and departments. It's not as vibrant or culture-driven as some of the other main cities, and it's known as the Bush Capital i.e. more vegetation than people! The university itself is based on a beautiful campus and caters for every aspect of the student life, whilst also being one of the best universities in the country. Canberra itself isn't the most exciting place but Sydney is within driving distance and Canberra centre has plenty of entertainment.

Could you give any travel or immigration tips?

Shop around for a decent flight price - I went to the student travel agencies initially but they're not always the cheapest. Also, apply for your visa well in advance.

Could you give any advice or tips to a student preparing to go or tell them anything you wished you knew in advance?

Definitely read as much as possible about where you'll be staying. I found that making that place feel like your home as soon as possible really helps when settling in.

Would you say it is cheaper or more expensive to live than Sheffield?

Far more expensive. However, the minimum wage in Canberra is about 16 (11) so if you have wages coming in you'll find life much easier!
