Why did you choose Sheffield?
I chose Sheffield because of the size and location of the school. My study abroad advisor also suggested it because of the good relationship she had while working with the school. Another reason that I chose Sheffield was that the cost of living estimates were very reasonable compared to many other Universities.
Where did you live?
Crewe Flats
Did you join any societies or clubs at Sheffield?
Basketball Team, 5 a side Football League
What did you do for fun/ at weekends?
Enjoyed going to the Union parties including Pop Tarts, Beer Festival, Frouk. Watched lots of English Premiership matches both in the local pubs and at the stadium (Sheffield United). Hiked out to the Peak District and toured the Botanical Gardens. Hosted parties in our common room.
How does the workload/classes/teaching styles vary to back at home?
Independent study was emphasized more then back at home. The student was responsible to study and get what he/she wants out of the course.
Describe Sheffield in a short paragraph
An amazing town that is not too small or too big. Because of its perfect size Sheffield can be seen almost entirely on foot. The city center offers the convenience of major shopping and the Peak District provides fun for the outdoorsman in you. In addition to this, Sheffield has a low cost of living that suites a student life style. The University itself has a great student union that throws parties for every taste and flavour and offers some of the cheapest beer in town.
If you could give advice to a prospective student thinking of choosing Sheffield, what would you say?
Sheffield is uniquely English. It is not a mega city like London, but it has its own charm. If you want to mix with the local English students and experience "real" English culture then Sheffield is a great place. Also, Sheffield was very affordable compared to many other parts of England. By not having to worry so much about money, you will have the freedom to do many things during your stay at Sheffield.
Could you give any advice or tips to a student preparing to come to Sheffield or tell them anything you wished you knew in advance.
Be patient and be prepared to walk everywhere. You may not get immediate responses to your housing queries or registration needs. Once you get past registration and moving into your flat you will have a great experience. Have a great time for you are going to an amazing city that is overflowing with English culture.
