Why did you choose Sheffield?
The University of Sheffield has a good reputation for engineering, especially mechanical and materials, and gave me the oppourtunity to study subjects that are not offered at my home university. Also the outdoor activities in the peak district were a big drawcard.
Where did you live?
I lived in Stephenson Hall
What did you do for fun/ at weekends?
Trips into the Peak District or other nearby areas, local sporting events such as ice hockey, football and mountain biking.
How does the workload/classes/teaching styles vary to back at home?
None of my modules ran tutorials so it seemed the students were expected to do more independent study and research. The other major difference was the lack of intermediate assessments, with the final exam being the only assessment for a number of my modules.
Describe Sheffield in a short paragraph
A big city that feels little, with a lot going on, a good central location and great atmosphere. The uni is right in the city with a collection of older style grand buildings and new modern architecture. Supportive and relaxed atmosphere.
If you could give advice to a prospective student thinking of choosing Sheffield, what would you say?
Well worth a good look, talk to current students in the discipline you wish to study to get an idea of what they think. Check out the campus and facilities available as they are of a high standard.
Could you give any advice or tips to a student preparing to come to Sheffield or tell them anything you wished you knew in advance.
Get out and see the city, especially at night time. Take the time to make a trip or two into the Peak District and take every opportunity that you are given.
