Taking 6 months to study abroad at the University of Sheffield was probably one of the best decisions of my life so far. From the moment I arrived to the sad day that I left, I had an absolute blast!
All in all I would definitely recommend the University of Sheffield to anyone interested in doing the Study Abroad program. For me it was a life changing experience that I will never forget.
Where did you live?
I chose to stay in catered student accommodation, but differently form other Study Abroad students I lived in a residence with predominantly British students. This was a great experience as I got to live and learn with a group of people from the country and culture I was living in, as opposed to living with other people on the Study Abroad program.
This is something that I would definitely recommend for any prospective students. Everyone we met was great and up for having a great time, as well as supportive with studies. Living in catered accommodation meant we had out meals supplied, which was great - no cooking!
Could you give any advice or tips to a student preparing to come to Sheffield or tell them anything you wished you knew in advance.
The University of Sheffield has probably the best Students Union I have ever heard of, with so many services available to its student members – it´s amazing! From the various clubs and societies (I did caving which was awesome!) to the union club nights held every night of the week, going to university in Sheffield is as much about having a good time as it is learning.
The university itself was extremely helpful and supportive, with various people always there to clarify any problems on your mind. Sheffield city centre is great too - not big enough to be daunting but just large enough to have everything you could possibly need.
Sheffield is an hour or two train ride from Manchester which is great for catching a plane to anywhere in Europe for surprisingly little money! Buses to London are easy to catch and only cost about a pound if booked in advance, and York is a beautiful city only an hour north! Trams and buses can take you anywhere you need to go in Sheffield and probably my favourite thing was the Sheffield dry ski slope, where you can take skiing and snowboarding lessons.
