It’s never too late to follow your dreams

Angela Davison and Catherine AnnabelEver thought about learning new skills but worry you won’t have the time, you’re too old or you’re not cut out for studying? Well, put your worries aside and be inspired by two of your colleagues, Catherine Annabel and Angela Davison, who with the help of the University’s Institute of Lifelong Learning (TILL) were able to turn their desire to learn into a degree.

We hear from them both about what it takes to become a graduate when you’re balancing commitments of work, family and study and why for them it has been a rewarding experience that has left them with lifelong friends.

Catherine Annabel is an administrator in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. In July she will graduate with a degree in French.

How did it all come about?

“I already have a degree in English and biblical studies but I have always had a passion for French language and literature and I wanted to take it further,” says Catherine.

As a mother of two working full-time, Catherine’s family initially thought she might be taking on too much.

“My children were baffled that I would volunteer to study when at the time they were complaining about having to do exams and homework,” says Catherine.

Support from TILL staff, being able to study at evening classes and do homework in her lunch-hour all helped Catherine balance her commitments.

“The TILL staff were incredibly supportive and enthusiastic and even if you’re juggling several things they want to make it possible for you to succeed – whatever your circumstances,” says Catherine.

What were the best bits for Catherine?

“I think the sense of accomplishment, following a passion and meeting some great people”, she said.

Unlike Catherine, Angela Davison didn’t have a degree when she started her TILL course but that hasn’t held her back.

A secretary in the Registrar and Secretary’s office, Angela left school with eight CSEs and no O-levels – she later studied for GCSE Maths and English and computer qualifications.

Angela, who will graduate with a BSc in IT and Organisations through TILL, said: “It was a bit of a shock doing assignments for the first time but as time went on it got a lot easier.

“I had great support from my work colleagues, TILL staff, my family and my classmates.”

How does Angela feel now it is all over?

“I have to admit I feel relieved as I was balancing full-time work and six years of study but I’ve also found it really rewarding and have met some lovely people who I’ll stay in touch with”, says Angela .

What’s next for Catherine and Angela?

Angela said: “I’m really happy with my current role but it’s good to know that this new qualification gives me the option to look at graduate level jobs in the future.”

Catherine is keen to study further and is talking to the Department of French about doing a PhD.
