How do we build sustainable communities?

The Sheffield Colloquium is a flagship, ground-breaking event, and a central part of the Discover and Understand project. It will be held over the week commencing 18 March, and features some of the University’s world-class researchers. The idea is simple: to promote interdisciplinary thinking amongst our undergraduates around the question, “how do we build sustainable communities?” with the help of some of their favourite lecturers and professors.

Academics from a wide range of departments will be taking part in the colloquium, including Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Science Tony Ryan, who will be talking about Project Sunshine, and Professor Mike Braddick, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Professor Braddick will be discussing democracy and political engagement, and he will be looking to sharpen our thinking about how (given current institutional arrangements) more active political engagement might be fostered.

The Colloquium will also feature Danny Dorling, Professor of Human Geography, and Professor Jenny Saul, head of the Department of Philosophy, as well as a host of other academics who have come together to try and answer the question of building sustainable communities.
The Colloquium is taking place during an incredible week of events in Sheffield, which will also see Professor Ryan interviewing the BBC’s Jim Al-Khalili, host of Radio 4 show “The Life Scientific”, about his life and career in physics.
