Corporate Information & Computing Services (CiCS)
Annual Student Satisfaction Survey 2005
You asked for Instant Messaging Software
- The web versions of all the main instant messaging systems, including Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL all work on our network and we are investigating making a supported service available. More information is on our website at www.shef.ac.uk/cics.
You asked for more PCs
- The Information Commons will provide around 900 study spaces, with about 500 equipped with PCs and all wireless enabled.
You asked for more printers and value loaders
- We provide 67 printers in 40 locations across campus. Given this provision further information and research is needed to identify the wider nature of this issue and fully understand the problem. We are therefore consulting with students on this issue and drawing up a plan to address their needs.
You asked for cheaper printing
- We have reviewed the cost of printing and it cannot be reduced at this time because of the actual costs of delivering the printing service. However, FinePrint has recently been installed on the managed service which allows students to easily print duplex, four sides per page and group together jobs for printing, so that printing costs can be reduced for individual students.
You asked for longer opening hours
- To facilitate students working outside core hours we provide two 24/7 facilities at Sorby IT Centre and St Georges IT Centre. The new Information Commons will also be open 24/7 when it opens in February 2007.
You asked for more wireless networking
- We have extended the wireless network to cover all major teaching and social areas across campus.
You asked for better support
- We will look to improve information provision and will revamp our website during 2005/6. The Information Commons will also facilitate the provision of better support for students.
