The Chancellor's Medal 2012
Nominations are invited for the 2012 Chancellor’s Medal.
Final year undergraduates, postgraduates completing their programme of study/research and recent graduates of the University are eligible to be considered for this award, which is made in recognition of the outstanding attainment of an individual student in academic or sporting activities or in other personal achievements.
The award was funded by the University’s sixth Chancellor, Lord Dainton of Hallam Moors, who held office from 1978-1997. Cast in silver to an original design by Lord Dainton, it is presented to the recipient at a Degree Congregation.
All members of the University are invited to consider making a nomination for the award. Previous winners include:
- a student playwright who won a number of promising newcomer awards and went on to work for the Royal Court Theatre
- a mature graduate nursing student who undertook a lot of voluntary work in supporting cancer sufferers and was co-founder of the Aurora Centre, a project which focuses on and helps deal with the psychological effects of cancer treatment
- a recent Psychology graduate in recognition of her outstanding achievements in the field of international athletics
- an Urban Studies and Planning student who worked tirelessly to raise awareness of matters relating to students with disabilities and to educating and informing society’s attitudes in this area
- a graduating Engineer for outstanding contribution to the University of Sheffield and also for contribution to improving societies both nationally and internationally through use of her knowledge and skills via the organisation ‘Engineers without Borders’

Nominations usually take the form of a letter outlining how the student meets the criteria and a supporting statement giving the reasons for the nomination. Any supporting evidence that may be useful in considering the nomination is also gratefully received.
Nominations must be submitted to Cheryl Hewitt, Student Services Department, University House, Western Bank, Sheffield S10 2TN (email c.hewitt@sheffield.ac.uk, telephone 0114 222 1277) by the closing date of Monday, 30 April 2012. Please provide the registration number of the nominee on the nomination.
A final decision on the award will be made by the Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the Chancellor, on recommendation from the Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellors.
