Opportunities with the English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC)
Teaching Assistants
If you are interested in working abroad teaching English as a Foreign Language or if you would like to meet people from other cultures, volunteering as a teaching assistant for Partners´ English is a great way to do this. Partners´ English classes are offered to partners of registered students of the University. We run classes at three levels for female partners and a mixed level class for male partners on Mondays and Fridays between 9.30am and 11.00am. You are guided by qualified and experienced teachers, and the emphasis is on improving spoken English. Previous experience is not required but may be advantageous. Reliability is, however, important and you need to be committed for at least a semester.
Social Programme Organiser
A good way to earn some money and have fun at the same time is to work as a social programme organiser for ELTC. It´s also a wonderful opportunity to meet people from other cultures. It involves keeping ELTC students informed about activities in the University and in Sheffield so that they can enjoy all the social and cultural possibilities and meet new people. You also organise and lead a weekly social event for ELTC students. It involves about four hours work a week including evening and weekend work.
Liaison Officer
ELTC welcomes a number of overseas student groups for English language courses at different times of the year. If you like meeting new people and would like to develop your interpersonal skills, working as one of our liaison officers is a good way to do this. The work involves various tasks such as meeting students at the airport, helping them to settle in to the University and getting to know the city, accompanying them on a range of half and full day excursions and liaising between the students and ELTC administrative staff. Hours of work and times vary and include some weekend work.
