Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) Number
What is a CAS number?
Tier 4 requires you to score 40 points before a visa is granted; 30 points are awarded for confirmation of a place to study at the University of Sheffield and 10 points for proof of your funds.
When you apply to extend your visa, you will need to obtain a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number from the Student Services Information Desk (SSiD). This will be your confirmation of a place to study at the University of Sheffield (30 points). If ATAS clearance applies to you, you must obtain ATAS clearance before the university can assign a CAS to you. You will not be assigned a CAS until you have ATAS clearance for your current area of research.
You will also need to prove that you have enough funds to support yourself during your studies in Sheffield (10 points). To find out if you have sufficient funds, use our flowchart on the link below:

If you apply to extend your visa to start a main academic programme you will use the CAS number that the Admissions department will issue you on acceptance of your offer. If you apply to extend your visa to start a course at the English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC) you will use the CAS number that the ELTC will issue you on acceptance of your offer.
When issuing you with a CAS number, the University is agreeing to `sponsor´ you. The University will need to report you to UKBA if you do not enrol at the University or if you withdraw, take a leave of absence, change your course or have a series of unauthorised absences.
If you were given a Visa Letter to apply for your Tier 4 visa before February 2010, the University will also report you to the UK Border Agency if you withdraw, take a leave of absence, change your course or has a series of unauthorised absences.
