Funding Delays (Undergraduate Students)
Making enquiries about late payments
If you are still waiting to find out about your loan and grant entitlement you may be concerned that you will not have enough money in time to start University. Ideally you should bring enough money along with you to cover your expenses until your loan and grant have been assessed and paid to you. Because of the expected delays It is important that if Student Finance are awaiting any information or evidence from you that you provide it to them as soon as possible so that it speeds up the payment process. You may have received notification that you are to receive less loans and grant than you expected. It may be the case that this is an interim assessment and that you will be assessed fully after you have registered on your course. You should check your financial notification from Student Finance to make sure you have all the funding you are expecting
1. Contact Your Award Assessor
2009 new students contact Student Finance for your area
Students starting before 2009 contact your local authority (see other websites link)
If you have not yet received financial notification from Student Finance (which tells you what help you can get with fees and living costs), contact them to find out when you are likely to receive this.
- Find out if the assessment has taken place and when you are likely to receive your financial notice.
- If your award assessor cannot complete the assessment because they do not have all the information they require, find out exactly what they need to resolve it.
- If you have the information they need, ask if you can fax it to them. Get the fax number and a name of the person to address it to.
- If your application is caught up in a backlog, ask for an idea of when they expect to have dealt with your application.
If your award assessor has completed their assessment but you still have not received any money, there may be a problem at the Student Loans Company.
2. Contact the Student Loans Company (SLC)
If you have received the financial notification from your LA you should have completed the Loan Request on the reverse and returned this to the SLC. If you have done this, but your loan still has not been paid, you need to phone them (0800 405010) them to find out the cause of the delay.
- If the money is to be issued soon, then find out exactly when it will go into your account so that you can explain to your bank.
- If there is a problem which needs resolving before payment can be made, find out exactly what this is and what action is needed on your part (or that of the University).
- Check what will happen once you have followed their instructions, and how long it will take for the money to be paid so that you can negotioate with your bank if necessary.
Remember: When speaking to the SFE, Local Authority
- Make a note of the name of the person you are speaking to, the date and time you called and what was said.
- Make sure you have understood what they have said by repeating back to them your understanding of the situation and getting them to confirm.
Don´t worry if your funding hasn´t been confirmed, we have in place support and arrangements to help you manage your accommodation and living costs over the period whilst your funding comes through. For example we may be able to help with your living costs by organising a short term loan which you can pay back once your Student Finance England funding arrives (please see link in the see also column at the right of this page)
If you are staying in University Accommodation and are worried that you will not have sufficient funds to meet your first term accommodation payment on the 1st October, you should contact:residencefees@shef.ac.uk, tel 0114 2224868, or call into the Income Office, Level 6, University House before the 1st October payment date. We may be able to rearrange your payment until after you have received your loan and grant (please see link in the see also column at the right of this page)
