Prizes
Details of any new prizes which are to be established as University (i.e. not internal departmental) prizes should be notified as soon as possible to the Taught Programmes Office, and by a published deadline (normally during April each year) at the latest.
You will be sent details of existing prizes early in the new year and asked to make any amendment. We also need to be informed of any changes intended to the Regulations of existing University prizes.
The "Undergraduate and Taught Postgraduate Prizes" web pages provide support for departments who are setting up a new prize or making changes to an existing prize (see the link in the "See Also" box on the right), including good and bad examples of Regulations and guidelines which will assist you with the wording of any new or changed Regulations which need formal approval by the relevant Faculty. Draft Regulations submitted via the web pages are reviewed by the Taught Programmes Office before being forwarded to Learning and Teaching Services for approval and inclusion in the next edition of the University Calendar. This is normally finalised in the late Spring/early Summer of each session.
Administrative and financial arrangements also have to be put in place for new or changed prizes, and the award of a prize can unfortunately be delayed if these amendments are not notified in good time.
Arrangements for submitting recommendations for the award of University prizes are circulated by the Taught Programmes Office at the same time as notes on submitting examination results. Students are normally notified of the award and sent any prize cheques, etc. by the Student Services Department. In some cases notifications and cheques etc. are handled by academic departments, especially where prize sponsors are in contact with departments direct and in such cases Student Services will only be responsible for recording the award of the prize on the official University student record.
The first point of contact in the Taught Programmes Office, for matters concerning new and existing prizes, is Cheryl Hewitt (Ext. 21277)
