Lutheran Churches
Lutheran churches emerged at the time of the Protestant Reformation in Northern Europe. They stand broadly within the Evangelical tradition and follow the teachings of Martin Luther (1483 – 1546).
Lutherans assert that the Holy Scriptures are the source and norm of their doctrine and life. Like Luther, they emphasise that God offers his eternal love to humans as a gift. It is not something that can be earned. Styles of worship can vary. Often Lutheran services are in the `catholic´ tradition, following ancient liturgies and observing historic usage. Some congregations, however, offer a simpler style of worship. Music has always been an important part of Lutheran worship. The liturgies are often sung. Lutherans celebrate Holy Communion regularly, believing that the true body and blood of Christ are really present, distributed and received under the forms of bread and wine, for the forgiveness of sins and spiritual nourishment.
