BA in Modern Languages (UCAS code: T900)

The BA Honours in Modern Languages provides intensive study of three modern languages in addition to the study of the cultures and societies in which those languages are spoken.

Students

Basic structure of the course

Year 1 (Level 1)

In Year 1 you will take:

One Major language worth 40 credits, chosen from French, German (both Post-A Level), Spanish or Russian (Post-A Level or Beginners); plus

A second Major language worth 40 credits, chosen from French, German (both Post-A Level), Spanish or Russian (Post-A Level or Beginners), Catalan, Czech, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese; plus

A third subject which can be a 40-credit language course chosen from all the languages above; or 20 credits of Italian plus either a 20-credit Linguistics module or a further 20-credit free module; or two such 20-credit free modules. The Linguistics module is taught by Linguistics specialists in the School of Modern Languages.

Year 2 (Level 2)

In Year 2 you will take:

One 60-credit Major language ('Major A') from those studied at Level 1 (choose from French, German, Russian, Spanish).

One 40-credit Major language ('Major B') from those studied at Level 1 (choose from French, German, Russian, Spanish, Catalan, Czech, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese).

One 20-credit Minor language, which can be further study of your third language taken at Level 1. Or you may choose a Beginners' course in one of the following: Catalan, Czech, Dutch, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Luxembourgish.

Year 3 (year abroad)

The third year of the course, your Year Abroad, will be spent in countries relevant to the two Major languages you have chosen to study (one semester in each country concerned). During the Year Abroad, you can go to university, be an assistant teacher or undertake a commercial workplacement, or a combination of these.

Year 4 (Level 3)

In Year 4:

You will continue and complete your study of the two Major languages (60 and 40 credits) and the one Minor language (20 credits) which you chose in Year 2.


N.B. In addition to the Year 1 Linguistics module, Linguistics options are available within the Year 2 and Final Year programmes of all Major A languages except French and in those of some Major B languages.
