The School of Modern Languages and Linguistics (SOMLAL) has a large number of undergraduate courses. You can study:
  • Two or three languages with linguistics or interpreting skills
  • Specialise in one particular language
  • Choose a dual degree where you combine language with another subject

BA Modern Languages

The BA Honours in Modern Languages (BAML) aims to provide intensive study of three modern languages (or of two modern languages with linguistics). This is combined with studying the societies in which those languages are spoken.

Language options for non-language degrees

You can also choose to study a language as one of your options on most University degree courses. The Modern Languages Teaching Centre offers a variety of language modules from beginners to advanced.

Degrees specialising in a language

Each of the following departments offer many language-specific degrees. To find out more about individual degree courses, please follow the link to that Department's website.

French

Choose from a single honours French degree, or combine French with another subject to gain dual honours (for example, combine it with Journalism, Politics, English and many more).

German

Study for a single honours degree in German, or a dual degree in German and another subject including, Dutch, Computer Science, Archaeology, Music.

Hispanic Studies

Hispanic Studies encompasses a wide variety of language choices from single honours, double degrees (eg. Hispanic Studies with Catalan Philology), or you can combine with another subject such as English, Computer Studies, Philosophy, to obtain a dual degree.

Russian and Slavonic Studies

Russian and Slavonic studies offers single honours degree courses in Russian alone, or Russian with Czech or Polish. There is also a large choice of dual degrees allowing you to combine Russian with another subject.
