School of Modern Languages and Linguistics

The School of Modern Languages and Linguistics (SOMLAL) comprises five departments that work together as a School to offer top quality provision in all of its undergraduate and postgraduate courses, combined with a wide range of innovative research activities.

While contributing to the School as a whole, individual departments maintain their unique identities and expertise. This allows students to benefit from belonging to one (or more) of our departments, while being able to reap the benefit of specialist knowledge from within the overall School.

The School and all of its departments have been recognised for the quality of both teaching and research. The most recent Research Assessment Exercise awarded us an average score of 5, denoting research of 'international excellence', and the last Teaching Quality Assessment achieved ratings of 'excellent' across the board.

Postgraduate

There is a wide range of opportunities for postgraduate subjects within the School, from taught Masters and Research Track Masters, to MPhil and PhD research degrees.
