Academic Profile

I have taught at the University of Sheffield since 2006. Before that, I held a research position at Sheffield Hallam University and taught in the sociology department and human services program at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Research

My research interests are divided into two strands. The first focuses on social change and international development. I have conducted research on the transformation of the middle class in Morocco and on sustainability of social projects in India. One of my current research projects involves investigating social mobility and quality of life among middle-income and low-income families in Morocco, with the intention of debating the concentration on poverty among development studies scholars and policy officials.

The second strand looks at the impact of social services and the status of professional social service. I have worked with a number of community and national organizations in the US, the UK, Morocco, and India on program design and evaluation. I am currently writing a book outlining a sociological approach to social service evaluation. I am also developing a research project on how social work reflects state investment into class structure, class relations, and principles of public altruism.
