Research centres and networks

Reflecting our commitment to interdisciplinary research, members of staff and postgraduates also participate within a wide range of interdisciplinary research centres and networks based within the University. Indeed, three of these – Sheffield Institute for Studies on Ageing (SISA), the Centre for the Study of Childhood and Youth (CSCY) and the Centre for Gender Research have their origins in the Department. Currently, the Directorship of CSCY is based within the Department as is the Director of the Centre for Gender Research, the Lead of the Centre for IRiS and the Lead of the Parenthood Research Network.

Interdisciplinary Centre of the Social Sciences

The Interdisciplinary Centre of the Social Sciences (ICOSS) is a large scale dedicated facility for social science icoss5.jpgresearch icoss5.jpgpromotes and supports evidence-based interdisciplinary research to inform social policy at regional, national and European levels.

Centre for Criminological Research

The Centre for Criminological Research is the focal point for criminology and criminal justice at the University of Sheffield, one of Britain's main research-led universities. Reaching across the university to bring together experts from a wide-range oCCR logof excellent departments, it forms a multi-disciplinary Centre conducting high quality research about key criminological subjects.

South-East European Research Centre (SEERC)

SEERC is an international, not-for-profit research centre jointly established by the University of Sheffield and CITY Liberal Studies; it is located in one of the ancient hubs of South-East Europe, Thessaloniki, Greece. The Centre and its activities are founded on the belief that by supporting the peoples, economies and political institutions of South-East Europe through the conduct of research and policy analysis, the dissemination and application of findings and the facilitation of open and informed discussion, a significant contribution can be made to the development of a stronger, more stable and more prosperous European community.SEERC logo

Centre for the Study of Childhood and Youth

The Centre for the Study of Childhood and Youth was established in 2002. It is a multi-disciplinary Research Centre committed to contributing to the improvement of children and young people's lives. Through research and dissemination it is actively involved in gaining a greater understanding of the lives of children and young people in modern society and in helping to develop and shape local, national and international policies that improve their everyday lives.CSCY logo

Centre for Gender Research

The interdisciplinary Centre for Gender Research was set up in 2006 with support from the Social Science Divisional Research Fund.

It has more than 50 members who are primarily researchers (staff and students) working in a diverse range of departments and disciplines and are interested in interdisciplinary gender research in the social sciences.

The Centre Director is Dr Victoria Robinson.

Worldwide Universities Network

The Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) is a partnership of 17 research-led universities from Asia, Australasia, Europe and North America.

The WUN alliance exists to make significant advances in knowledge and understanding in areas of current global concern. Parenting Research Network

The Parenting Research Network aims to bring together researchers from across the Faculty of Social Sciences, ScHARR and the University to discuss research on parenting, parenthood, childhood and families and build inter-disciplinary networks and research collaborations.

Interdisciplinary Research in Socio-Digital Worlds (IRiS)

This research stream addresses the ways in which dimensions of social and technological worlds interact in economic, political, social, and cultural life. The development of digital services is interacting with broader social change often subsumed in terms such as Information Society, Knowledge Economy and Digital Culture.

Sheffield Institute for Studies on Ageing (SISA)

The Institute is both a core group of specialists in gerontological research and training, who form a Section of the Division of Clinical Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine, and a cross-faculty network of academics in the University of Sheffield with active interests in gerontology.

Science and Technology in Society (SATIS)

Based in the Department of Sociological Studies, SATIS's aim is to explore the inter-relations of science and technology with the dynamics of society.

University of Sheffield Race Research Network

An interdisciplinary, cross-faculty initiative that seeks to provide academic staff and PGR students the opportunity to share, support and generate cutting-edge innovative research in any of the following areas: Black, Caribbean and Diaspora Studies; African, Asian, Black British and African American culture/literature/film/history; Postcolonial studies; Immigration experiences; Hyphenated identities; Civil Rights; Identity, language and linguistics; Nationhood, space and race; Slavery studies; Other areas concerned with issues of race, ethnicity, colour and identity.

Disability Studies at the University of Sheffield

A group of academics, postgraduate and post-doctoral researchers who are interested in the inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary process of theorising disability and challenging the conditions of disablism: the exclusion of people with physical, sensory and cognitive impairments.
