What our students say
"The University of Sheffield appeals to many as it has an excellent academic reputation and the best students union in the country. The Sociological Studies Department is highly ranked with a range of staff many of whom are leaders in their fields. The staff are extremely friendly and there are a wide variety of people offering help and support including tutors, lecturers and current students. Being given independence to choose modules which appeal to you enables in-depth study of areas which you are passionate about. There are also opportunities to become involved with the department including student mentoring and becoming a course rep."(Louise, Level 3, BA in Sociology) |
"Choosing to go to the University of Sheffield has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. This department does not disappoint. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and very approachable which makes learning in this department very enjoyable."(Matthew, Level 2, BA in Social Policy & Sociology) |
"Although I did Sociology at GCSE I hadn’t considered taking it as a degree until I came to Sheffield. I have found staff in Sociological Studies friendly and getting involved with Sociology Society has made my experience at Sheffield University the best it could be."(Amy, Level 2, BA in Sociology) |
"I visited Sheffield and it felt like home. I had been to look around various other universities, but none of them had felt as comfortable as this one. The Department itself impressed me greatly and as soon as I left I couldn’t wait to start my first term. However, it wasn’t just academia that impressed me when I arrived but also the open, friendly nature of the lecturers, staff and other students."(Liam, Level 2, BA in Sociology) |
"My home university in Denmark offered excellent opportunities to study in England and as I’d heard very good things about it, Sheffield is where I decided to go. I chose Sociology as it offers an interesting mix between abstract theory and practical research which are both skills I’ll need in my further studies."(Kristian, Level 3, ERASMUS/Sociology) |
"The department is one of the best in the UK. When I visited on the open day, everyone was very friendly and took the time to answer my questions and I liked the Elmfield Building as it has computer rooms, a common room, lecture theatre and seminar rooms all under one roof.I’m really glad I chose the Social and Political Studies Honours degree at Sheffield because I find the subject really interesting and I’ve been able to get involved in the department by becoming a course representative. I feel at home in the city, the people are friendly and nearly everything is within walking distance of where I live." (Su, Level 3, BA Sociology and Political Studies) |
