Trip to Malta

Flag of Malta In April 2009, students from the Department of Sociological Studies will travel to Malta for an undergraduate research symposium. The symposium will provide a means for Sheffield students to exchange experiences of undergraduate research with students at the University of Malta. The exchange will explore compare perspectives on social problems and policy responses across different cultural contexts. Students from the Department of Youth and Community Studies and the Institute of Forensic Studies at the University of Malta have also invited Sheffield students to join them for a social activity.

There will also be occasion during the trip to see the Baroque architecture of Valletta, walk 'back in time' through the ancient city of Mdina, visit the island of Gozo, along with plenty of Mediterranean sun, sea and cuisine. Laurie Bazin and and Ruth Harrison, who lead the Sociology Society, are organising the event, along with Paul Knepper, Level 2/3 programme tutor.

The Department of Sociological Studies enjoys excellent links with the University of Malta. Marilyn Clark, the head of the Department of Youth and Community Studies, completed her PhD in Sociological Studies at Sheffield. Dr Knepper has also been a visiting professor at the Institute of Forensic Studies.
