Single honours in Social Policy and Sociology

Our degree structures reflect our ongoing efforts to deliver innovatively taught modules at the forefront of knowledge. Building on strengths as a leading Department that combines Sociology, Social Policy and Social Work, our goal is to ensure that we deliver teaching of the highest quality, inspired by cutting edge research and which maximises the opportunities available to our students.

Each year you will take 120 credits, including all core modules. Modules are assessed by a variety of methods, which include course work, project work and exams.

LEVEL 1
Level 1 introduces key concepts, theories and debates in sociology and social policy. It includes weekly seminars for our core modules, enabling you to work in small groups to consolidate and clarify your learning. You can also choose from a range of optional modules enabling you to explore areas of sociology or social policy that particularly interest you.

LEVEL 2
Level 2 aims to consolidate learning, promote critical thinking and reasoning, and impart other core skills, with a special emphasis on developing your research skills and knowledge of key institutions of the contemporary society. The options you can choose relate to the major issues at the heart of sociology, such as deviance, religion and belief or the family. In level two there is an emphasis on equipping you with the skills, tools and knowledge base to enable you to become independent sociologist or social policy analysts.

LEVEL 3
Sheffield is a world leading research-university, which emphasises the idea of research-led teaching. In Sociological Studies this approach is at the heart of our Level 3. Working closely with your dissertation supervisor, you will undertake a research project, on a topic of your own choosing. In this you will develop your skills as a social researcher, and demonstrate how you can use the theoretical frameworks and methodological tools of the discipline to investigate and report on a significant social or sociological issue. In addition you will be able to study a range of specialist options, on topics that´s reflect the current research interests of your lecturers. Teaching will be in small groups, based on workshops and seminars and you will engage with the issues at the forefront of sociology and social policy, on topics such as surveillance, the environment, new genetics or masculinities. Our aim is to ultimately engage you in doing sociology, rather than simply reading about what sociologists do; so that you will graduate as a novice sociologists and/or social policy analysts.
