Dual Honours in:
Sociology and Business Management
Business Management and Social Policy
The Department of Sociological Studies, in partnership with the School of Management, is pleased to announce the launch of two brand new degrees from September 2011:
- Sociology and Business Management (UCAS code: NL2K)
- Business Management and Social Policy (UCAS code: NL24)
The study of business management alongside sociology and social policy makes for an extremely coherent and complementary curriculum. Business studies is historically rooted in the world of private for-profit institutions operating within economic markets. Sociological studies investigates human engagement with their social environments and dominant institutions, including the world of work, consumption and production and the impact of society on, amongst other things, power, autonomy, poverty and inequality. By bringing these worlds together, these two new degrees will allow students to develop a more critical eye on the interface between state and business institutions.
Students will explore in depth sociological approaches to corporations and markets and market approaches to public services. The issues they will typically cover include: corporate social responsibility; the social benefits and risks of corporate activity; the power and influence of global corporations; public and private welfare markets.
Such skills are likely to be in increasing demand over the coming years given the shrinking gap between public services and private markets in most states.
Students on the Sociology and Business Management degree will focus more on the utilisation of social theory to understand business organisations and their place in contemporary capitalist societies. Business Management and Social Policy students will focus more on the specific interface between for-profit organisations and the welfare state, including schools, hospitals, universities and the personal social services.
Applications should be made through UCAS.
