Excellence in teaching
The Department is top-ranked for teaching quality, scoring maximum marks (24/24) in its most recent Teaching Quality Assessment (2001). We deliver stimulating, well-structured courses across the span of contemporary sociology, and our students benefit greatly from being taught by some of the leading experts in the field. We are committed to offering our students a variety of learning experiences, through lectures, tutorials, class discussions, group activities and field courses.
Flexible course structures
Sociology degrees at Sheffield are characterised above all by the high level of flexibility and choice they offer to students. As our students progress through their degrees, so they are increasingly able to choose modules specialising in the topics they find most interesting and stimulating. With over 30 full-time lecturing staff, we are able to offer in particular a wide range of in-depth final-year modules.
Research of international standing
In the recent Research Assessment Exercise (2008) overall 95% of our research was rated as of international standard, within this, 45% was rated as internationally excellent and 20% as world-class. In choosing a place to study, it is important to realise that research expertise and teaching quality are intrinsically linked. You will be taught by academics at the cutting-edge of their subject in a Department with excellent facilities.
