Who should take this course?
This course is designed for prospective global social policy analysts, professionals working on social policy in international organisations and development agencies, global policy advocacy agencies and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
The programme was established by Professor Bob Deacon, a world-leading scholar of global social policy.
Course outline
This masters course is designed to address the need to act and engage in social policy at a global level. The course addresses pressing global social problems like poverty, inequality, the spread of disease, ageing, and international crime and analyses how the world has responsed in terms of global social policies.
The course draws upon different disciplinary traditions (international relations, sociology, political economy, development studies) in order to better understand the following:
- the origins of global social problems and the adequacy and effectiveness of global social policy responses
- the ways in which national social policy is shaped by global actors
Aims and outcomes
The MA in Global and International Social Policy will equip you with the ability to:
- critically assess comparative policy research
- critically assess policy transfer research and practice
- distinguish between politics and research
- apply and critically assess a range of criteria to compare countries
- evaluate selected social policies against selected criteria
- critically assess aid and policy dissemination policies of international organisations (IOs)
- act as a beginning international social policy consultant in a chosen field
- undertake research into the international policy making process
- undertake policy analysis work for international organisations
- act as a beginning policy advocate for international NGOs and other agencies
