Who should take this course?
This course is designed to provide an excellent grounding for those wishing to pursue or develop further their skills and careers as researchers and practitioners working for the continued development of services and rights for children, whether in the public, private or not-for-profit (NGO) sectors.
Course outline
This new MA is an innovative and exciting programme providing first-class teaching by scholars of international repute. It is provided in close collaboration with other staff in the University´s Centre for the Study of Childhood and Youth. Students will have the opportunity to learn in a research-led, inter-disciplinary environment, to which the programme is committed. The programme, which will make good use of available technology in the provision of learning opportunities, will be delivered using a wide range of teaching techniques, including lectures, seminars, workshops, student-led discussion and project groups, whilst assessment will be through both examinations and continuous assessment, the latter including written work and group presentations.
Aims and outcomes
The MA will give students:
- an up-to-date and critical understanding of the epistemologies, theories and processes through through which children and childhood are currently understood and defined
- the ability to critically reflect upon and analyse social polices and practices relating to children in the context of their rights under international law and conventions
- a thorough grounding in research methods in order to enable them to critically evaluate research outputs and methodologies in the field of childhood studies, and to design and undertake high-quality research of their own
- the ability to locate their learning about children and childhood in an interdisciplinary and international context
- advanced teaching that offers the specialised understanding of the particular methods and skills that are necessary in order both to understand and undertake research with children
- a range of transferrable skills and knowledge that will be of benefit not only to them in career terms but also to the organisations and children for whom you might work
