Funding by governments and research institutes

Most of our overseas candidates are funded by their own governments or institutes. A financial guarantee from your funding body will be necessary before final admission but an offer of a place may be made to you conditional upon obtaining such a guarantee.

British Government Scholarships

1) Commonwealth Scholarships
Applicants from Commonwealth countries are eligible to apply for Commonwealth Scholarships. These scholarships cover fees and living costs. In case of any difficulty in finding information in your own country you may contact: Association of Commonwealth Universities, 36, Gordon Square, LONDON WC1H 0PF.

Please note that nominations must be received in London by 31 December of the year pending entry. Local agencies will impose an earlier deadline - therefore if this is a possible funding route for you, you must contact your home country agency around one year before you intend to come to Sheffield.

Further details are available on the ACU website:

ACU website
2) British Chevening Scholarships
The British Chevening Scholarships, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the Department for International Development (DfID), are prestigious awards which enable overseas students to study in the UK.

The scholarships are offered in more than 150 countries for study in any subject field for those pursuing full-time postgraduate or second degree courses or full-time research at a UK higher education institution. The scholarships cover all or part of the cost of the period of study. Preference is given to postgraduates or those already established in a career and in countries receiving bilateral aid, the development relevance of the course is important.

Candidates for the scholarships are selected by British Embassies and High Commissions overseas in consultation with the local British Council representative. Application must be made through the British Diplomatic Mission in the students' country of origin.

More information can be found at your local British Council office or on the Foreign and Commonwealth office webpage:

Self-funding

A self-funded student will normally require UKP16,500 per annum to cover fees and living costs. This excludes the costs of any accompanying persons or family and travel to and from the UK.

Other sources

There are a variety of other sources of funding available for overseas students to study at British universities.

However, if you have a form of funding which falls outside the categories please contact one of the admissions tutors.
