University Teacher in Social Work

Summary:
The Department of Sociological Studies at the University of Sheffield has an established international reputation for excellence in teaching and research across the disciplines of Sociology, Social Policy, Social Work and Social Anthropology.
Applicants will be expected to make a contribution to the teaching and assessment of postgraduate students, at both qualifying and post-qualifying levels, with a particular Children and Families emphasis. You will also be expected to undertake administrative duties in support of the work of relevant programmes. Applicants should hold a good first degree or (equivalent qualifications/experience) in a related subject and will have a recognised social work qualification and substantial experience of professional social work practice in a recognised specialist Children and Families setting. We particularly welcome people who could contribute to teaching in the following areas: safeguarding children; social work theory and methods; assessing children's developmental needs; and aspects of supervision and management. A publication record and experience in applying and teaching practice skills will be an advantage.
This full-time post is available from 1 September 2012.

You will also have experience of academic supervision of students, preferably at postgraduate and doctoral level, as well as a proven ability to motivate high performance in others.

Research Assistant

Summary:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Assistant to join the Department of Sociological Studies and make a significant contribution to the RESPECT project.
The successful applicant will work on a research project recently funded by the European Commission under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7): Rules, Expectations & Security through Privacy-Enhanced Convenient Technologies' (RESPECT)'.
The project will evaluate social, economic and privacy costs of growth of surveillance technologies, measure citizen's attitudes towards surveillance, and develop tools so that policy makers and those deploying systems can do so in ways that most respect privacy and citizens rights.
The post holder will be the first point of contact, liaise with project partners, set up processes and procedures to enable the project to develop and be responsible for the day-to-day management of the project under the guidance of the Principal Investigator. You will a hold a PhD, or be close to completing, within a relevant Social Science Discipline along with a relevant Masters level qualification (or equivalent experience / qualifications for either). The post holder will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills necessary to develop and maintain effective working relationships. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to travel nationally and internationally to attend research meetings and undertake research visits.
This fixed-term is available immediately until 31 March 2014, working 14 hours per week.
