Welcoming international students

The University of Sheffield has a large international community, with more than 6,500 international students from over 115 countries. Here in the Department of Sociological Studies, we have a diverse community of staff and students from countries around the world, including Austria, Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Nigeria and Taiwan, to name just a few.

Our research is recognised on the world stage, with 79% of the Department’s research rigorously judged to be world-leading or internationally excellent in the latest Research Excellence Framework (2014). Our world-leading research informs our teaching, which is regularly rated highly in the National Student Survey. The Department was also awarded the highest ranking in all of its main disciplines in the most recent HEFCE Teaching Quality Assessment.

Visit the University of Sheffield's International Students pages to find out about visa requirements, funding opportunities and other information specific to your country.

There is lots of support available to international students when they come to Sheffield. You can be picked up from Manchester Airport when you arrive and take part in a range of activities in your first week to help you get to know the city, the University and other students.

Supporting you

Here in the Department of Sociological Studies, we have an academic member of staff who is specifically dedicated to providing support to international students. The University also has a Student Services Information Desk to help with any academic, financial, personal or social issues, with three specially trained immigration advisers. Other support includes: an international database to help you look for jobs worldwide and an international students’ blog, to help you keep up-to-date with news, key vacancies and items affecting international students. You can also get tips from existing international students about career planning and looking for work.

The Students’ Union has its own Student Advice Centre, and the University also provides health and wellbeing support through the University Health Service and the University Counselling Service.

Two international students from the Department of Sociological Studies, Tat Chor Au Yeung and Yang Luo, shared with us their experiences of being an international student living in Sheffield and studying in the Department. Tat Chor and Yang explain the things they have enjoyed most in Sheffield, as well as the challenges they faced when adapting to life in a new country. They also offer advice to other international students who may be thinking of coming to Sheffield.
