Who is it for?
Nurses must be on part 1, 8, 10,12 or 15 of the professional register with a minimum of six months experience in an intensive care of the newborn environment, this may include NICU or NSU. Students will be required to demonstrate the appropriate clinical/professional background and experience pertinent to the units undertaken, it is therefore important that students are currently working within the relevant area of practice in order to fulfil this particular aspect of the programme. Although not a requirement of the programme, it is advisable for prospective students to have support from their managers.
What is it about?
- Critically analyse and evaluate the evidence-base relating to the care of the neonate requiring intensive care.
- Critically reflect on and evaluate current approaches to care delivery in practice.
- Critically evaluate the specialist knowledge and skills required to promote and deliver evidence-based practice that addresses the physiological, psycho-social and cultural needs of the neonates, and their families within the context of the multi-disciplinary teams in practice.
- Develop inter-professional learning, team-working and collaboration skills through discussion and reflection on practice with other students/health care workers.
- Critically analyse and evaluate the use of professional and clinical decision making skills to create and maintain an environment in which carers and clients are enabled to make informed choices.

How does it enhance practice?
Neonatal nursing, in line with other fields of nursing continues to develop to reflect the current healthcare agenda. Nurses need to be equipped to face new demands placed on them by such changes as advances in technology, greater involvement in care by both the patient/client and family and the implications of health policy. The knowledge and skills required for evidence and research based practice and a range of neonatal and learning focussed units are needed by practitioners to function effectively in current clinical practice. The BMedSci(Hons) Health and Social Care studies (Neonatal Intensive Care) programme for qualified nurses offers opportunities for neonatal nurses to advance not only intellectually but also clinically and professionally and thus provide the required evidence based care to patients and their families.

60 credits from:
SNM3114 Intensive care of the newborn (20)
SNM3115 High dependency care of the newborn (20)
SNM3116 Concepts of care of the newborn (20)
20 credits from:
SNM3135 Research appreciation and Application (20)
SNM3182 Promoting evidence based practice (20)
40 credits from:
Students can't commence the dissertation unit until they have successfully completed 80 credits which must include either research appreciation and application or evidence based practice units.
Students have a maximum of 5 years from the start date of the first module to complete this programme.
Further credit information:
•Students intending to undertake this programme should have completed 120 credits at diploma level 2(5)
•Students accessing this programme are permitted to AP(E)L a maximum of 20 credits from within the University or other institutions
•When 120 credits at degree level 3(6) from the above have been completed students will be awarded the BMedSci (Hons) in Health and Social Care Studies
