Left-hand quotation mark
I am enjoying being able to investigate numerous lines of enquiry, and have the possibility to read what I want, rather than to limit myself to specific essay-based reading... If you are passionate about your research, then this is the time for you to put that passion to professional use. Enjoy researching, and knowing that you are pushing the boundaries of research in your own field.Right-hand quotation mark

The School of Languages and Cultures at Sheffield is a highly-regarded research centre with a thriving and dynamic postgraduate community which is ideally placed to help you make a significant contribution to scholarly debates in your chosen field.

When you undertake PhD study with us, you will pursue a course of research training which helps you to shape the way you deliver your research to a wider audience, and also looks ahead to the different professional contexts which will be important to you. Training is tailored by you, in consultation with a supervisor, to your specific needs, whether these be honing communication and dissemination skills, receiving advice on research publication or developing advanced IT skills (for example, for working with corpora).

If you’re interested in developing your teaching skills, you will also have the opportunity to attend professional development workshops to become a Sheffield Teaching Assistant and gain teaching experience as a part-time tutor.

Supervision

All research students are assigned a primary supervisor who will be an acknowledged expert, and a secondary supervisor who is able to offer a different perspective on aspects of your thesis. Researchers in the School work on a very broad range of subjects, including but not limited to literary studies, cultural studies including performance, film and visual/material culture, intellectual and political history, gender and queer studies, linguistics (descriptive, applied, sociolinguistics, etc.), and contemporary institutions, with relevance across the globe.
